What if chocolate was a necessary currency and not just a commodity? For thousands of years this was a fact in ancient South American cultures.

Every one loves a bar of chocolate – but what would you tell if you could pay the gas description when a bin of chocolates or purchase a car in imitation of chocolate eclairs? Well, if you lived in Central America round very nearly the 1500’s – chocolate (or at least the cocoa bean) was hard currency and, according to some, more essential than gold.

The legacies of the Aztecs and Cortez have been embraced by manufactures and wholesale chocolate suppliers who now manage to pay for an amazing range of confectionery for us to enjoy.

Imagine a world where cocoa and chocolate were more costly and desirable than gold? Think how this could have distorted the face of the world and made wholesale chocolate suppliers the richest people on earth – but at the thesame time, deprived us of one of our most favourite confections.

Today, cocoa may not be as critical as gold – but in the hearts of the good British public, eating a fine bar of chocolate or visceral utter a bin of chocolates as a present is on the subject of as good – and some tell even better!
